History

The name “Allegan County” came about thanks to a student of the Indians, Henry Schoolcraft in approximately 1835.  The county was an attraction due to its sources of water power and farm production. In fact, for many years, steamboats traveled the Kalamazoo River between Allegan and Saugatuck. 

Employment

Allegan County is home to the Perrigo Company, which is a leading global healthcare supplier that develops, manufactures, and distributes over-the-counter and prescription pharmaceuticals, nutritional products, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and consumer products.  The company is the world's largest manufacturer of over-the-counter pharmaceutical products for the store brand market.  

School Districts

Allegan Public Schools includes several high schools and elementary schools, including: Allegan High School, Alternative High School, L.E. White Middle School, Dawson Elementary, Pine Trails Elementary, North Ward Elementary, and West Ward Elementary. The school system just put out a bond proposal for technology and facility improvements, which will allow the district to move forward for its students. The schools have high attendance ratings and high average test scores across the board.

Lakes and Rivers

Kalamazoo River - In late July 2010, a major crude-oil pipeline near Marshall dispersed approximately 20,000 barrels of oil, much of which entered into the Kalamazoo River. It has served as a reminder to the state just how vulnerable and special Michigan’s fresh water supply is, and how we should take care of and value it every day. Thanks to this tragedy, there has been a growing interest in local sustainability for Michigan’s natural resources associated with the Kalamazoo River, its tributaries, lakes, and connected groundwater. 

Miner Lake - Not only is this a stunning, all-sports lake that you can enjoy some water play in and on, but it’s an area surrounded by nature—its tranquility, beauty, and wildlife. It’s only minutes from the Allegan downtown area and approximately 25-30 minutes away from the Lake Michigan coast, Grand Rapids, Holland, and Kalamazoo. This 325-acre lake is known for its fishing, waterskiing and tubing, boating, and swimming. When you’re done in the sun, you can head over to the Regent Theatre to cool down and relax while watching some first-run movies at insanely low prices. 

Dumont Lake - Need to take a little relaxation time in a serene setting? Dumont Lake Campground is the camping paradise in Southwest Michigan. Stay for a day, week, month, or season—they’ve got the space and all the hookups you need! The season is May 1 through October 15, and you can enjoy a variety of activities from swimming, boating, and fishing, to shuffleboard, horseshoes, and pool, to potlucks, campfires, Amway tours, the art museum, and the Allegan Antique Shows. 

Lake Allegan - This manmade Michigan lake was constructed near that of the Allegan dam. Are you looking for the perfect small, quiet destination to boat and fish? Look no further! Lake Allegan is home to numerous fish, from bluegill and catfish to bullhead and northern pike. Just be aware—the lake is shallower than most, so big boats are discouraged. However, this makes the lake ideal for boaters of a younger age. Have a picnic next to the water or stay in the Allegan Bed and Breakfast for extra comfort! 

Allegan County Fair

In 1852, the first fair was held at the County Court House, put on by The Allegan County Agricultural Society. Starting in 1990, renovations to expand the fairgrounds were made. The fairgrounds now sit on approximately 115 acres of land, including a public campground. On that land also sits one of the largest county fair livestock barns and arenas in Michigan, with an indoor exhibit hall complex of over 38,000 square feet. The loveable Rocky Rooster is the unofficial mascot of the fair. 

Parks

Allegan County has eight parks that are open on and off throughout the year to enjoy. Three are open year-round: Ely Lake, Pine Point, and Silver Creek. There are also five that are open from May 1 through September 23 (8am – 9pm): Bysterveld, Dumont Lake, Gun Lake, Littlejohn Lake, and West Side. The parks range from 4 acres to 320 acres in size, showcasing some of the most beautiful areas of West Michigan. And there’s plenty to do, too! You can boat, swim, fish, camp, go horseback riding, have fun on the playgrounds, or enjoy the numerous sports fields.

Allegan County is the 18th largest county in Michigan and consists of 24 townships. As of 2010, approximately 111,400 people live in Allegan County, Michigan, on approximately 827 square miles of land, 25 miles of which is along the coast of the gorgeous Lake Michigan. The median income per person is $50,240/year and the mean commute time is approximately 23 minutes.
