Grand Valley State University

The main campus of GVSU, which was founded in 1960, is located in Allendale on 1,304 acres of land 12 miles west of Grand Rapids. GVSU has been known as one of the fastest growing universities in the United States, both in population and physical size. The university is also ranked as one of the top up-and-coming schools in the Midwest. The university enrolls a total of just under 25,000 students on the Allendale campus and campuses in the surrounding area (the Robert C. Pew Campus in Grand Rapids, Meijer Campus in Holland, and through centers at Muskegon and Traverse City established in cooperation with local community colleges), and offers over 200 areas of study.

In the 2011-2012 academic year, 24,662 students were enrolled, the majority being undergraduates. The GVSU Lakers are part of the NCAA Division II league and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), with 20 intercollegiate sports—11 for women and nine for men. The school colors are blue, black, and white, and the mascot is Louie the Laker. 

Things to Do

Allendale Charter Township is close to downtown Grand Rapids at just 15 miles, as well as only 19 miles from the beautiful beaches of Grand Haven, Holland, and South Haven. 

Join a sports team! Allendale has many public teams to join, from AYSO Youth Soccer and Allendale Township Youth Athletic Association-Little League, to the Allendale Softball League andRocket Football, to Michigan Golden Gloves Boxing and The Meadows Golf Club.

Head to Placid Wake Park. It’s an outdoor facility where you can wakeboard, wakeskate, or wakesurf. They have a Sesitec System 2.0 Cable stretching over a 700-foot manmade lake, wake riding lessons, a beach atmosphere, and onsite pro shop you by Action Water Sports.

There are also a number of parks to visit. Allendale Community Park is located behind the Township Office, this park is home to the Veterans Garden of Honor, which was constructed in 1998 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the community. Aman Park sits six miles east of Allendale and has cross country skiing trails, hiking trails, and natural areas. Deer Creek Park is located five miles north of Allendale, with plenty of picnic areas, boat ramps, fishing areas, and access to the Grand River. Eight miles northwest is Grand River Park, which has a picnic building, fishing dock and small lake, boat launch, children’s playground, overlook platforms, three miles of nature trails, and picnic tables and grills. Hagar Park is nine miles south of Allendale. It has picnic areas with shelters, playgrounds, hiking trails, natural areas, and a ball field. Pigeon Creek Park is located ten miles southwest of Allendale and has numerous picnic areas with shelters, boat ramps, natural areas, and access to the Grand River. 

Public Schools

Allendale Public Schools includes the Springview Elementary, Evergreen Elementary, Oakwood Intermediate, Allendale Middle School, Allendale High School, and the New Options High School. With approximately a 93% graduation rate and close to 100% proficiency scores in both English reading and Mathematics, the school district proves that it is one of the top in the state.

The Allendale population is approximately 20,708, with slightly more males than females.
