Living In Belding, Michigan

Located in Ionia County off US-44, Belding, Michigan, is about 29 miles from downtown Grand Rapids, 56 miles from the state’s west coastline in Grand Haven, 55 miles from Michigan’s capital in Lansing, and about 145 miles from Detroit on Michigan’s east coast

History

In 1838, Levi Broas became the first settler of the area. The area was first named Broas Rapids, followed by Patterson Mills and during its logging height, Hog Wallow, before it changed to Belding, which was settled on to commemorate the Belding family. The area has much history, from the end of Ionia's East Main Street where a drill ground and encampment for volunteers during the Civil War is located; to the scenic Green View Point where a particularly bloody Indian battle took place; to just west of Muir by the Grand Trunk railroad where a high tree-covered hill, now called Arthursburg, was an Indian keep where numerous battles were fought over the land; to the Ionia Free Fairgrounds where there is a plaque in honor of Chief Cobmossa; to the large factory off the Main Street bridge known as the Richardson’s Mill, which was Belding’s first silk factory in 1887, that then became the Jolly Kids plant, which manufactured children's clothing; to White Swan, also known as Richardson's boarding house, which was Belding's first dormitory for women mill workers; to Cooks Corners, which was settled in 1837, and was said to have had a hotel with a dance floor anchored upon springs that bounced slightly as you danced and was famous throughout the Central Michigan area. To this day, several of the streets in the area still bear the names of Broas' children-Ann, Elizabeth, James, Mary, and Charles.

Activities and Recreation

Covered Village Mall - Open Monday-Friday from 8AM to 8PM and Saturday from 8AM to 5PM, the Covered Village Mall is home to a number of shops and services, and is located in the beautiful downtown area of Belding.

Belding Museum at the Historic Belrockton - The Belding Museum sits in the historic Belrockton and has been designated a Michigan Historical Site. The museum includes a Children’s Museum, an Exploration Lab, and hosts annual events during each month. The museum was once a women’s dorm for those who worked in the area’s silk mill. Now, it’s surrounded by gorgeous gardens and offers many fine programs and cultural events.

Parks

Silk City Nature Trail - The newest of the trails alongside the Flat River between Water Street Park and Demorest Field, the Silk City Nature Trail is a paved path perfect for walking and jogging.

Demorest Field - Sports are the main focus of this park. With 30 acres, Demorest Field is the center of Belding’s recreational ball fields. There are four little league fields, one Pony league baseball diamond, two softball fields, four baseball diamonds, and play equipment in addition to a running track and walking trails. A concession stand is also on the premises.

Central Riverside - Five acres on the Flat River in the center of Belding paired with walking trails, a ten-station exercise trail, a playground, lighted tennis courts, basketball courts, soccer fields, a sand volleyball court, a state park, a roller hockey area, picnic shelters, and a pavilion makes this park a go-to for an active day out and about!

Water Street - Need an escape? Talk a walk, enjoy the art kiosks, paddle around in a canoe, cook out on the grills, or let the kids play on the playground as you enjoy the quiet, natural beauty in the Water Street park.

East Riverside - With the Flat River to view along with nature and all her beauty, this is a park to relax at. There’s a boardwalk, a pavilion with live music, a boat launch, playground equipment, a gazebo, and a walking path that continues from Ashfield Street through the park. The park gardens are sponsored by the Silk City Nature Association

Lightning Bend - With 100 acres of woods and trails to trek, you get the taste of the countryside along a bend in the Flat River. It’s all about adventure in the wild here, with a pavilion perfect for a picnic after a long day of walking.

 
Schools

Belding Public Schools - For 2010-2011, Belding Area Schools (as a district) made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in Englishlanguage arts and mathematics. Additionally, Ellis Elementary, Woodview Elementary and Belding HighSchool all made AYP. However, Belding Middle School did not make AYP. Below you will find the reason Belding Middle School did not make AYP and a summary of the actions underway to improve. Belding Public Schools consists of Belding Early Childhood Center, which includes the Early Childhood Developmental Delays, Jump Start, and Free and Tuition-Based Preschool;  Ellis Elementary, which includes grades K-2; Woodview Elementary, which they say “is dedicated to the academic, social and personal growth of all students, so each becomes a contributing member of society”; Belding Middle School, which was named as a National School to Watch in February 2008 for being a school “that shows exemplary efforts and progress”—Belding Middle School is only one of six in the state to receive this award; and Belding High School, which has approximately 640 students and offers a personalized setting making it “The Right Size. The Right Choice.”

Faith Community Christian School -This independent, evangelical, nonprofit school is a member of the Christian Schools International and governed by a parent-elected board. The school was established in 1981 and includes 15+ churches and 10+ denominations, but it keeps the class sizes small and teaches a Christian world-and-life view in all areas. The school is located off M-91 between Belding and Greenville.

Montcalm Community College - Located about 22 miles away from Belding, MCC has approximately 2200 students, 62 associate degree, certificate and job-training programs; courses for transfer to bachelor’s degree programs; online courses; and articulations with other colleges that offer students a seamless transfer. It was established in 1965 on 220 acres near Sidney, Michigan, and prides itself on combining state-of-the-art facilities and technology with its highly qualified instructors, small class sizes, and affordable tuition.

In 2011, Belding’s population was 5,658 people, with approximately 52% females and 48% males, 55% single, 45% married. The median cost of a home is $99,300, and compared to the rest of the country, Belding’s cost of living is 15.7% lower than the U.S. average.
