The Plainfield Charter Township area has had a remarkable, steady rate of growth and development over the past 30 years with no sign of slowing down any time soon. 

The area of Belmont, Michigan is located in the southwest part of Michigan, just north of Grand Rapids. Plainfield Township is less than 36 square miles and is characterized by its rolling hills, rivers, and creeks mixed with new and old human development. 

History

Plainfield Township was founded in 1763 when Rene' deLa Salle sailed up the Grand River with intentions of finding a shorter route from the Detroit River to the lower parts of Lake Michigan. One of the first settlements was Plainfield Village, which was on the north side of the Grand River. Andrew Stout established it in 1838 with a ferry, followed by a blacksmith stop and hotel. In 1840, the first sawmill and gristmill were constructed on the Rogue River. A post office was next in 1843, and by 1845, Plainfield Village was home to about 800 people, four hotels, five stores, and six saloons. Comstock Park was another settlement, but it was originally known as North’s Mill, then Mill Creek before it was named Comstock Park. Belmont, was originally named Whitney when it was established in 1874, and was the center of the Grand Rapids and Indian Railroad, now the Penn Central. 

Demographics and Statistics

The United States Census shows that since 1970, the Plainfield Township area’s population has increased from 16,935 to 30,195 in 2002, which makes an average annual growth rate of 2.61%. In 2000, the median age was about 35 years old. Approximately 30% of the Plainfield Township’s population is between the ages of 25 and 44 years of age, with roughly 23% of the population between the ages of 45 and 64 years of age. In 2000, the Township’s mean household income $65,061 compared to the state average of $57,400. 

The values for total real property state equalized value in the Plainfield Township area has increased with a pace of 7.6% annually, and it is now second behind Cascade Township.

The average travel time to work for most residents in the Belmont area is 21.5 minutes.  

Employment Opportunities

Employment in the Plainfield Township area is mainly “white collar” positions. Management and professional occupations account for about 31% of all jobs, while service occupations and sales/office occupations account for about 12% and 30%, respectively. Construction and maintenance operations account for approximately 9% of all jobs, while production and transportation is roughly 17%

Local Activities

The Plainfield Township Farmers Market - Located in front of the Frontline Church off Plainfield Avenue and 5 Mile Road, the market has vendors who sell homemade crafts, flowers, plants, fruits, and vegetables. It’s held every Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm-7pm when it opens in June and doesn’t close until the weather starts to turn in October

Youth Programs - With a variety of sports teams, Boy Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs, and theatre and musical programs, your kids will never miss an opportunity to grow, learn, be active, and be social!

Parks, Lakes, and Rivers - There are a variety of public parks for the enjoyment of the community, including: Versluis Park, DW Richardson Park, Gold Dust Park, Ambrose Park, Airway Park, Northgate Park, Packer Park, DNR Park, and Dean Lake Park. Some are multi-use complexes and include fields for local sporting events, although the majority offer space for many forms of recreation, from swimming and fishing, sports  fields, picnic areas, and playgrounds.

The Township also has eight lakes with a total of 400 acres of surface area. The lakes include: Dean Lake, Duck Lake, Freska Lake, Little Pine Island, Mead Lake, Mirror Lake, Scott Lake, and Versluis Lake. 

The two main rivers in the Plainfield Township area are The Grand River and Rogue River, each with riverfronts that are conducive to recreational activities and home to much wildlife. 

Schools

Northview Public Schools - The three elementary schools (East Oakview, North Oakview, and West Oakview), two middle schools (Highlands and Crossroads), and two high schools (Northview High School and Northview High School East Campus) educate approximately 3450 students. The district holds a National Blue Ribbon for Exemplary High School

Comstock Park Public Schools - Home to approximately 2500 students, the Comstock Park Panthers’ schools are organized a little differently than some districts. Greenridge has Preschool, Kindergarten, and PPI programs; Stoney Creek has 1^st-2^nd grade; Pine Island houses 3^rd-5th grade; Mill Creek has 6^th-8^th grade; Comstock Park High School has 9^th-12^th grade students; and North Kent High School is home to all alternative high school students in grades 9tj-12^th.

Rockford Public Schools - There are numerous early childhood schools available as well as Belmont Elementary School, Cannonsburg Elementary School, Crestwood Elementary School, Lakes Elementary School, Meadow Ridge Elementary School, Parkside Elementary School, Roguewood & Spanish Immersion Elementary School, Valley View Elementary School, East Rockford Middle, Freshman Center, North Rockford Middle, Rockford High School, and River Valley Academy (alternative high school). Every Rockford Public School building has earned an “A” grade from Michigan’s Department of Education’s Accountability Program, making it only one of two districts in West Michigan with that ranking. Every school in Rockford Public has also earned the Blue Ribbon School Exemplary State Board of Education Award. In addition, the school district has a state and nationally recognized Fine Arts program, highly successful athletic programs, a rigorous curriculum, OM (Odyssey of the Mind) teams, high parental involvement, and numerous National Merit Finalists every year. 

Kenowa Hills Public Schools - The schools include Kenowa Hills Early Childhood Center, Zinser Elementary (K-5), Kenowa Hills Central Elementary (K-5), Alpine Elementary (K-5), Kenowa Hills Middle School (6-8), and Kenowa Hills High School (9-12). In the 2010-2011 school year, all eight schools made Adequate Yearly Progress according to the State of Michigan.

Kent Intermediate School District - This district includes Kent Career Technical Center (KCTC) and Kent Transition Center (KTC). KCTC enrolls high school juniors and seniors from all schools in the area and gives students the opportunity to focus on specific trade skills in order to prepare them from college, internships, and the world of employment. KTC is similar by providing a hands-on and academic combination of entry-level job skills, career training, and experience in the workplace for high school juniors and seniors. 

Chandler Woods Heritage Academy - This charter school has an enrollment of approximately 700 students from Young 5s and Kindergarten through eighth grade. There is no tuition fee.
