Byron Township is located in West Michigan with US-131 running North/South and M-6 running East/West through the Township. Byron Center Township allows for an easy drive to Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, and even Lansing, and a 25-minute drive to the Gerald R. Ford International Airport.

History

Nathan Boynton set up a farm in Byron Township in 1835, but being taken sick, his brothers Jeremiah and William Boynton began his improvements for him, which started the movement of people into the township. Byron Center was organized in 1836 and the first town meeting was held at the house of C.H. Oakes, in Grandville.

The land is diverse, from rolling farms and suburban neighborhoods, to thriving commercial districts and 21st century industrial developments. The area is a strong faith-based community that has great pride in its exceptional Parks and Recreation department, which is located in the community center at Whistlestop Park. The community center offers a state of the art exercise/fitness center, multipurpose activity courts, and meeting rooms for community organizations, which includes a full kitchen facility. Both Whistlestop and Bicentennial Parks offer soccer, baseball, softball, and tennis courts. There is also a skate park, walking trails, and a fully-stocked trout pond. From adult programs to youth programs to active and young at heart programs, Byron Center always has activities for a variety of ages.

Demographics

In 2010, Byron Township’s population was 5,822, with approximately 51% females and 49% males, predominantly Caucasian. In 2009, the estimated median household was $65,723 and the estimated median house or condo value was $193,210. The cost of living index in March 2012 was 88.3, which compared to the national average of 100, is below average. 

Education

Byron Center Charter School - Byron Center Charter School is a Public School Academy, meaning that it is a school of choice, and offers

Kindergarten through 12th grade.  Byron Center Charter School has just over 200 students and prides itself on having a low student/teacher ratio to keep the class sizes small and there is no tuition required. The Kindergarten schedule is part-time: Monday, Wednesday, alternate Fridays or Tuesday, Thursday, and alternate Fridays.

Byron Center Christian School - With room for preschool through eighth grade, Byron Center Christian School not only offers sports, summer camps, but also a curriculum that includes art, Bible, language arts, math, music, physical education, science, social studies, and Spanish. Children must be enrolled by parents or guardians and there is a tuition payment, however, scholarships are available. 

Byron Center Public Schools - The public school system includes three elementary schools (Marshall, Countryside, and Brown), two middle schools (Nichols Intermediate and Byron Center West Middle), and one high school (Byron Center High School—with just under 1100 students). With a curriculum that supports Michigan’s standards and test scores and attendance that is in the 90% percentile, Byron Center Public Schools continues to excel and grow. The number of students who go on to postsecondary educational institutes, as well as the number of college equivalent classes that are offered at Byron Center Public Schools, the number of enrollment in those classes, and the number of students receiving college credit in those courses continues to increase year after year. The Bulldogs are a part of the OK Green Conference and have a number of athletic programs for both middle school and high school, not to mention numerous summer camps for all ages. 

Universities - There are a number of colleges/universities nearby with over 2000 students, including: Davenport University (about 11 miles; Grand Rapids, MI); Calvin College (about 11 miles; Grand Rapids, MI); Grand Rapids Community College (about 12 miles; Grand Rapids, MI); Grand Valley State University (about 14 miles; Allendale, MI); Hope College (about 20 miles; Holland, MI); Western Michigan University (about 37 miles; Kalamazoo, MI); and Baker College of Muskegon (about 39 miles; Muskegon, MI).

Activities

Byron Center Historical Society - The Byron Center Historical Society is home to a museum and a genealogy research room in the Historic Town Hall, which was built in 1876. The society was organized to preserve and protect the history and heritage of Byron Township. The main floor holds the old post office, a doctor's office, and a general store. Displays on farming reflect the rich rural history of all 36 square miles of our Township! We are have a great collection of pictures, quilts and farm implements available for your viewing pleasure! The second floor holds a great collection of Veteran history as well as a real school room, which is used for reenactments of older school days. The genealogy research room is full of family histories and records of Byron Township ancestors. 

From featured speakers on historical subjects to antique road shows for heirloom appraisals, the elegant lumber baron’s home is open to tour! Membership is only $10 per person and you receive a quarterly newsletter with interesting historical facts and who's-who tidbits about the township as well as announcement of upcoming speakers, programs, and antique appraisals. In addition, your membership is tax deductible and the dues go toward preserving the historical heritage of Byron Township.

Dome World Campground - Located at the junction of US-131 and 84^th Street, Dome World Campground is open May through September every year and has amenities such as TVs, showers, horseshoes, a swimming area, a playground, and a recreation field for its guests. Fees range from $23-$32 and Dome World has 50 sites available.  

Byron Fun Spot - The roller skating and family fun center is located just off 84^th Street and room for all birthday and private parties. Byron Fun Spot has weekly public skate sessions and skate rental is available for a low price. There are also plenty of arcade games to keep everyone busy when they are recovering from all of the skating.
